We are approaching the commemoration of ten years since the Great East Japan Earthquake.
The Great East Japan Earthquake was an unprecedented compound disaster resulting in enormous and
widespread devastation, with the accident at the TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in addition to
the earthquake and tsunami. The affected areas are making steady progress in their reconstruction, through
the tireless efforts of the local people supported by various actors such as NPOs, volunteers, companies,
and universities.
Many challenges remain, such as providing mental healthcare and other support for
affected people, restoring and improving the environment in areas affected by the nuclear disaster, and
dispelling the negative reputational damage.
The "Ten years later: Tohoku Today and in the Future" commemorating ten years since the Great East Japan Earthquake Portal Site uses images and video to share easy-to understand information about the state of reconstruction
in the affected areas, memories and lessons from the disaster, and the attractions of Tohoku.
The
site's content is constantly updated with information about events happening around the region, photo
contests, online symposia (on demand), and more. We hope this content will be informative for a wide range
of visitors.
